AT&T, who recently took over Time Warner, has now acquired Otter Media, the parent company of Crunchyroll. John Stankey, chief executive of WarnerMedia, as Time Warner has been renamed, will oversee Otter. Mr. Stankey said in a statement that AT&T planned to “harness Otter’s expertise” to strengthen its own digital assets. He did not say which ones, but Warner Bros. owns niche video companies like Machinima, which focuses on gamers, and Boomerang. And DC Universe. In addition to Crunchyroll, Otter […]
As a guilty pleasure TV show, Riverdale is more fun in big chunks, which makes the DVD format a great way to indulge. Riverdale: The Complete Second Season is out Tuesday. This season ran 22 episodes instead of the 13 of the first season, so the set is four discs. (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a review copy of this DVD set.) This was the season where Archie (KJ Apa) became a junior mob enforcer and leader of […]
The Death of Superman cuts to the chase in the title — this is an animated retelling of the 1993 comic book crossover in which Superman, in order to save Metropolis, gets beaten to death by the alien Doomsday. It’s available on home video on Tuesday. (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a review copy of this Blu-ray.) A number of viewers are likely too young to remember that 25-year-old media event, and the ensuing lines and collector’s edition […]
Constantine: City of Demons expands the CW Seed animated shorts into an animated movie. Here’s the plot description: A decade after a tragic mistake, family man Chas and occult detective John Constantine set out to cure Chas’s daughter Trish from a mysterious supernatural coma. With the help of the mysterious Nightmare Nurse, the influential Queen of Angels, and brutal Aztec God Mictlantecuhtli, the pair just might have a chance at outsmarting the demon Beroul to save Trish’s soul. In a […]
The Lego DC Comics movies are always fun and funny to watch. I was looking forward to Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Aquaman: Rage of Atlantis not just for Aquaman (voiced by Dee Bradley Baker), but for the introduction of the newest Green Lantern, Jessica Cruz (Cristina Milizia). She’s both a new character in the movie and the bonus minifigure, available with the movie for a limited time. (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a review copy.) As shouldn’t […]
Disney has released a Marvel Rising trailer. This is for Marvel Rising: Initiation, a precursor to the Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors movie due later this year. Marvel Rising: Initiation is a series of six four-minute episodes written by Mairghread Scott, debuting August 13 on Disney XD. It’s about Ghost-Spider (formerly Spider-Gwen, voiced by Dove Cameron) going on the run after being framed for murder. A team of Squirrel Girl (Milana Vayntrub), Ms. Marvel (Kathreen Khavari), Quake (Chloe Bennet from Agents […]
As with last year, I was honored to be one of the judges putting together the “Top 10 Graphic Novels 2018” list for School Library Journal (since I blog for their Good Comics for Kids site). Here is their list of this past year’s top ten (with links to my reviews where I’ve covered them — clearly I have some catching up to do!). I don’t know what happened to Monkeybrain Comics — the digital publisher had a substantial launch in 2012 and put out some exceptional titles from well-known names, but with the exception of a few Bandette issues, hasn’t released anything since 2016 — but one of their best series, High Crimes, has a new edition coming from Image Comics next year. High Crimes, written by Christopher Sebela (Crowded, Heartthrob) with art by Ibrahim Moustafa (Mother Panic, James Bond: Solstice), is a […]
